Country Music began in the southern state of Georgia in the US, in the1920's.Country music often consists of ballads and dance tunes with generally simple forms and harmonies accompanied by mostly string instruments such as, electric guitars, violins, banjos and harmonicas. The term 'country music' gained popularity in the 1940's & today it is used to describe a vafiety of sub genres.the origins of country music are the folk music of mostly white, working class  americans, who blended popular songs, Irish and Celtish fiddle tunes, traditional ballads, cowboy music and various musical traditions from European immigrant communities. In 2009country music was the second most listened to rush hour radio songs in tghe morning commute & the most popular evening commute in the United States.

Country music gained massive popularity in the 1980's due to the huge expansion of FM Radio, adding numerous FM signals to rural & suburban areas. this led to record producers improving the quality of their acts to cater for the much wider audience. Another force that changed the sound of country music and pushed up it's popularity was the change in sound of rock music , with electric guitars moving in on the country sound. A number of classic rock stars such as Lynyrd Skynyrd & charles Daniels are more closely associated with the modern country music scene than they are withthat of the modern alternative rock scene. Though personally the legendary track "Freebird" does rather fly in the face or that analogy.

Country music became a world wide phenomenon in the 90's, down to basically one man, Garth Brooks, who had one of the most sucessful careers in popular music history, breaking records for singles & album sales. Live folk and country music concerts became massivley popular around the world. Toby Keith began his career in the 90's as a more pop oriented country singer, evolving into an outlaw persona.

Line Dancing in the early mid 90's influenced country western music, due it's massive popularity. The influence was so great that one country star said " the music has got pretty bad, I think and it's all that damn line dancing.

Young stars like Taylor Swift shot to the forefront just recently & created a massive wave of support that is being enioyed by stars Garth Brooks who is back on the road after nearly a decade's absence & to huge support from the folk and country music fan base across both sides of the pond.
