Ballet is a type of dance performance  that originated in the Italian courts of the 15th century and later developed into a dance concert form in France and Russia. It has since become a widespread, highly technical form of dance with its own French based vocabulary and terminology  It has been globally influential and has defined the foundations used in many other types of dance. Ballet requires years of training to learn and master, and continiuos practice to remain proficient. It has been taught in ballet schools around the world, which have historically used their own cultures to evolve the art.

A ballet dance performance  consists of the choreography and the music for the ballet production. A well-known example of this is The Nutcracker, a two-act ballet that was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a music score by the classical master composer  Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Many classical ballet works are performed with the accompaniment being classical and are theatrical and use elaborate costumes and staging, though there are exceptions to this, such as works by George Balanchine.

Contemporary ballet incorporates elements of classical ballet and modern dance

The movements use classical ballet technique and in many cases classical pointe technique as well, but it allows a greater range of movement in the upper body and may deviate from the strict erect body lines and forms found in traditional, classical ballet. Many of its attributes come from the ideas and innovations of 20th century modern dance, including floorwork, balletic movements and turn-in of the legs.

George Balanchine was the first pioneer of contemporary ballet. The style of dance he developed is known as neoclassical ballet, and lies between classical ballet and today's contemporary ballet. He used flexed hands, turned-in legs, off-centered positions and non-traditional costumes, such as leotards, tunics and powder puff tutu instead of pancakes tutus, to distance his work from the classical and romantic ballet traditions. He stripped bare the ballet technique by disposing  of sets, stories, tutus and anything else that would take focus away from the technique and skill of the dance. Balanchine's New York City Ballet brought modern dancers such as Paul Taylor in to dance with the company,  and he worked with modern dance choreographer Martha Graham, which expanded his exposure to modern techniques and ideas. During this period, other choreographers such as John Butler and Glen Tetley began to experiment in  combining ballet and modern techniques.

Today there are many contemporary ballet companies and choreographers, and many traditionally "classical" companies, also perform contemporary works. such as  the Paris Opera Ballet and Kirov Ballet.
